Frank G. Kirkland

Frank G. Kirkland, 88, Clayton passed away Tuesday morning, October 17, 2023, in Syracuse.

Frank was born in Three Mile Bay February 3, 1935, son of John H. Kirkland Sr. and Laura L. Ackerman Kirkland and he attended Clayton schools. A marriage to Elvira Gushlaw ended in divorce.

He grew up working on the family's farm in Clayton. From 1956 to 1963 he served his country in the US Army. He was a self employed carpenter and mason and later worked as a delivery driver for River Rat Cheese.

Frank was a life member of the Clayton American Legion Colon-Couch Post 821 and served in its Color Guard and was a member of Elks Lodge 496, Watertown. He enjoyed casino trips, playing the lottery, and gardening. He was a 13 Run Pool member and was an avid Yankees fan.

Frank is survived by his son, Kenneth Calhoun, Watertown; two daughters, Kimberly J. Duellman and husband Robert, Clayton and Kandi J. Dindl and husband Gary, Antwerp; two grandchildren, Chianna Gray and husband Jayson and Kari Dindl; three great grandchildren, Lillian, Estelle, and Leyna; brother, Carl W. Kirkland and wife Jacqueline, Watertown; sister Elsie I. Zehr, Watertown; his current companion, Betty Willoughby and her family, Clayton; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with his parents, Frank was predeceased by two brothers, James W., 2012, and John H. "Jack" 2005; brother-in-law, Richard L. Zehr, 2023; and former companion, Selma Calhoun.

A graveside service in St. Lawrence Cemetery, town of Cape Vincent will be at his family's convenience. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton and online condolences to his family may be posted at www.cummingsfuneral.com. In lieu of flowers donations in Frank's name may be made to the Children's Christmas Party, American Legion Colon-Couch Post 821, 518 Riverside Dr., Clayton, NY 13624.

Very sorry for your loss. My father Cliff Stokes was good friends with “”Frankie” as he would call him. And every year he would send me a river rat cheese, his pens and calendars, I always enjoyed receiving them and we corresponded by mail. Very nice man

To Betty and the whole family, we are saddened to hear of the passing of Frank. Such a quiet and nice guy. Always a hello and a smile from him. A great partner and dad. He loved his family.

To Elsie and the entire Kirkland family: I bowled against Frankie, drank with him, bought property from him and thought the world of him. He will be missed by anyone and everyone who knew him.
