Mary Alice Towsley

June 23, 2019

Mary Alice TowsleyMary Alice Towsley, 97, of Watertown passed away Sunday, June 23, 2019, at Hospice of Jefferson County.

Mary Alice was a lifelong resident of Watertown and a parishioner of St. Patrick's Church. She was born July 25, 1921 in Mercy Hospital, the daughter of Mollie and Leo Stumpf. She was educated in St. Patrick's School and Immaculate Heart Academy. She was employed as a secretary at the New York Air Brake, Co. until her marriage to George B. Towsley on September 12, 1953 at St. Patrick's Church with Rev. Eugene Kelly officiating.

When George began his CPA firm in 1968, Mary Alice assisted him as his secretary for the next seven years. She enjoyed playing bridge and golf, but especially took great joy in her family, particularly her grandchildren, and cherished the frequent gatherings over the many years. She was an active member of the Altar & Rosary Society at St. Patrick's Church, and an auxiliary member of the Monastery of the Precious Blood.

She is survived by her four children, Phillip Towsley of Watertown, Therese Lonczak of Utica, Margaret (Bruce) Martin of Liverpool, and Elizabeth (William) Bamann of Watertown; five grandchildren, William, Paul, Kevin, Catherine, and Michael, and her sister, Margaret Cartin, also of Watertown. She was predeceased by her husband George. In her final years Mary was lovingly assisted by Sherry Van Ness, who provided her with undying kindness and love, and Lynne Gordon who was always so faithful. The family thanks Sherry and Lynne for all they did for their mom.

Her funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 28, at 10 AM at St. Patrick's Church with Fr. Christopher Looby, pastor, presiding followed by burial in Glenwood Cemetery. There are no calling hours as per Mary Alice's request and arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Precious Blood Monastery, 400 Pratt St. or Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St., both in Watertown, NY 13601. Online condolences to her family may be posted at www.cummingsfuneral.com.

Hi Margaret and all the Towsley family,

Amy and I are so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. Though I do not recall meeting her, from that beautiful picture, I now know where you got your bright, vivacious smile :).

May God bless you Margaret, and your whole family, at this difficult time, and always.

Dear Liz and family, I am so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. Remembering your mom throughout our school years at St. Pat’s and IHC, and also whenever I happened to be at St. Pat’s. She always made a point of saying hello and asking about the family. I hope your wonderful memories help you all through this difficult time. I can’t help but think...”And God called his good and faithful servant home”.

Respectful greetings from one of the Old Guard on Paddock St. I was so saddened to see of your mom’s passing. Surviving 97 years is no easy feat and I know it required a LOT of caring and a lot of effort by a lot of people. I’m sure everyone shares the great joy of having had her with you for so long and celebrating a life so well lived.

Mrs. Graham's house has a young, new family on the corner of Massey St, so now Clayton Jank is the longest tenured resident (1958, I believe), all by himself in that huge, green house. We arrived in 1962, so I guess I'm in second place, starting to fix up our old house to sell. The only other ‘survivor’ I speak with is Mary Ann (Lopus) Decent in Florida.

It's unbelievable (and unfair), that we got so old so fast!
